What Happens If In The Future You Have Too Many Domains?

I’m going to tell you something that may be hard to swallow, but when you get it down, it will be much easier to keep you from getting distracted. Distracted by what? By all those $10 domains you may have.

For instance, you might have a huge list of undeveloped domains. You may have a few that you are using, but then you have this huge list of some that you’re not using. It really doesn’t matter how cheap a domain name is in terms of financial output if those undeveloped domains are going to be a drain on your mental energy. That is really more expensive and damaging to your focus than a few bucks out of your PayPal account.

Here’s what you need to remember.

Domain names may cost $9 or $10, but the ideas behind them are usually a dime a dozen. We all have ideas we think are great and we think we should run with them, we buy a domain, write a few ideas, and then they’re forgotten. If they are forgotten that quickly, nine times out of 10 they aren’t the right projects for us to pursue anyway.

Things that are simply ideas don’t deserve their own domain names. I used to be guilty of this. Like I said earlier, you get this great idea and one of the first things you tend to do is run out and buy that domain name because you’re thinking, “I’ve got this great idea, I better go get that domain before somebody else gets it.” I used to be extremely guilty of that. Now I generally don’t buy domain names until I’m ready to start a particular project. If I’m not ready, I don’t need the domain name.

The only exception would be if you were trying to protect your brand or your name. When you’re trying to do that you may want to quickly make sure those domains are in use. If you want to protect your brand or your name, make sure you get those domains, but make sure you’re using them.

There are still endless possibilities and domain names available when you’re ready. We tend to think, “I’ve got this great idea, I better go get that domain before someone else does.” The truth is even though there are so many domains being snatched up all the time you will still be able to come up with the right domain when it’s time for you to implement a project instead of just playing around with the idea of it.

Yes, you might have a clever name in mind. But, keep your mental energy as your priority. Piling on domains you may or may not use really isn’t good for your focus.

What do you do with domains that you really want to take off your plate?

First, let me say I am not a domain or website selling expert by any means. I can point you to a few resources, but really how you clear your plate is completely up to you.

If you want to get rid of a domain name you could just scrap it and let it expire, just let it go. You could sell it. Or you could outsource the project. You know that great idea you had? Remember that ideas are a dime a dozen. Most times it’s just easier to scrap the domain all together. Just let it expire, forget about it. I promise it won’t hurt too much and it really gets easier every time.

If you’re going to sell it, consider if it’s worth the effort or not. Again, my experience is limited when it comes to selling domains and websites. But, unless you have an absolutely amazing domain and not just something cute and clever, the chances of you scooping up a bunch of cash for it are going to be pretty slim. Decide whether the effort of selling it is even really worth it.

If you think the idea is terrific, but you can’t seem to find the time, outsource it. You have the great ideas, just find a team of people who can actually take those ideas and run with them and turn them into reality. If you think you can’t afford to get help with the development of the project, it’s probably not worth pursuing anyway. Focus on profitable ideas and just get rid of the rest. To be successful, you have to be focused. Get rid of the junk.
